Do not ask me
for a philosophical consultation
only to solve your problems.

Rather ask me for it,
to know better yourself.

italian version

Giorgio Giacometti graduated from Padua University in 1989 with a thesis on Walter Benjamin. At the same university, he later chaired several seminars inspired by Pierre Hadot's studies on ancient philosophy as a spiritual exercise.
With a Ph.D. in Political Philosophy, he has been a lecturer of History of Philosophical Thought at the University of Udine (North-East Italy), and teaches Philosophy at a secondary school for scientific and technological studies.

He has published several works on philosophy and teaching, among which are the books Ordine e mistero. Ipotesi su Schelling (Order and Mystery. Hypotheses on Schelling, Padua: Unipress, 2000) and Filosofia e amicizia. Un esercizio maieutico sul "Liside" di Platone e dintorni (Philosophy and Friendship. A Maieutic Exercise around Plato's "Lysis", Milan: Colonna, 2001).
As Vice-President of the Indological Society "Luigi Pio Tessitori", Giacometti has been involved in studies about the relationship between Indian and Greek philosophy (his article Plotino e Çankara. Una questione di punti di vista [Plotinus and Çankara. A Question of Points of View] appeared in the journal of oriental and comparative philosophy "Simplegadi", 2000, n. 1, pp. 11-33). He is also interested in phenomenological psychiatry and has translated a number of Ludwig Binswanger's books on the subject.

In 2005, together with other fellow philosophers, he founded Gaya Scienza, a forum on philosophical practice and philosophical counseling based in Udine, and since 2007 he is the national secretary of Phronesis, the Italian Association for Philosophical Counseling. He was also a member of the Scientific Comitee of the 9th International Conference on Philosophical Practice, which took place in Carloforte (Sardinia).
After having presented several seminars on philosophical practice, Giacometti now offers philosophical counseling in his office in Udine. In addition, he operates a drop-in listening service at the secondary school where he is a teacher.

His article Consulenza filosofica come professione. Aporetica di un'attività complessa (Philosophical Counseling as a Profession. A Complex Activity) was published in the journal "Phronesis" (n. 7, 2006). A translation of it has appeared with the title An impossible profession in the miscellaneous book Philosophical practice in Italy, introduction by Ran Lahav, Trapani: Di Girolamo, 2008.
